Geographic Information System (GIS) refers to a collection of technologies including computer hardware, software and data (e.g., U.S. Census Burea data). These technologies are combined to capture, store, organize, update, analyze and display geographically referenced features. Any location on a map can become an index to economic, environmental, cultural, ethnic, historical, demographic, and/or political information about that location. Datum from numerous sources can be tied together into a single map.
The GIS Department at Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments (SLRCOG) provides mapping support to all departments within our agency, as well as to local governments, counties and municipalities within our region. Our GIS Department is equipped with state-of-the-art hardware including a large format printer and utilizes ESRI mapping software. SLRCOG uses GIS to help make informed decisions and maintain up-to-date information on land use, economic development, transportation issues, emergency planning and mitigation, community development and water and sewer infrastructure. Our GIS database includes information for mapping socio-economic data, the state transportation plan, bus routes, water and sewer system locations and expansions, data on the regions senior citizens, and census and other information required for federal grants and loan programs.
