Heavy rain from thunderstorms caused major damage to Cottonwood Villa Assisted Living Facility in Bishopville, SC and forced an emergency relocation of 60+ residents. This herculean task was spearheaded by the Santee-Lynches’ COG Ombudsman, Sheila Brooks.

SUMTER, SC – July 23, 2019 started as an average hot South Carolina day but by the afternoon hours things changed dramatically for the Cottonwood Villa Assisted Living Facility in Bishopville, SC. The heavy rain associated with major thunderstorms caused a significant leak in the facility and forced the emergency relocation of 67 residents. This is a major feat to accomplish under normal circumstances, but Sheila Brooks, the Santee-Lynches COG Regional Long-Term Care Ombudsman, didn’t flinch and jumped straight into the fray.

Ms. Brooks immediately assessed her options and began making phone calls. She showed true compassion, unwavering commitment, and provided superb advocacy during the emergency relocation. She diligently ensured all 67 residents found a safe relocation destination place and were treated with dignity and respect throughout the process. As the primary driver in identifying facilities that would accept the residents, she also had to balance availability with the individual needs of the families.

The South Carolina Long Term Care Ombudsman Dale Watson stated, “This was Sheila’s first encounter with emergency relocation activities; however, she was Sheila Brooksundaunted and exhibited a tenacious spirit throughout the entire process. This relocation effort was a massive success as placement was found for 67 residents in two days without anyone being placed in emergency protective custody!”
