The Town of Turbeville was awarded a $683K Community Development Block Grant from the South Carolina Department of Commerce to upgrade their wastewater system. The system has seen a dramatic increase of groundwater and rainwater infill and infiltration.

SUMTER, SC – The South Carolina Department of Commerce has committed to investing $693,700 in the Town of Turbeville through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. The town has been experiencing a large amount of infill and infiltration of groundwater and rainwater to its wastewater treatment system. This additional amount of unnecessary wastewater treatment drives up cost and is equivalent to roughly 25% of the town’s current permitted rate.

The Town of Turbeville reached out to the Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments earlier this year to partner in finding a solution to the problem.

The award of these funds will allow the Town of Turbeville to address the issue and restore treatment capacity without costly upgrades to the current treatment facility or additional discharge permitting. This grant will ultimately leave the town postured to effectively control costs and better safeguard the health of residents.

Turbeville Mayor Dwayne Howell stated, “We are so pleased to have been awarded this grant. This will enable us to replace old pipes that have needed replacing for years and it will also cut down on the cost of treating water, most of which is ground water. A BIG THANK You to everyone involved in helping us secure this grant.”

Mr. Chris McKinney, Chief Executive Officer for the Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments, stated, “We take great pride that local governments in our region trust us to help them find solutions to pressing challenges and we are very appreciative of the funds from the Department of Commerce. These investments help our smaller municipalities to help themselves”. This grant will ensure Turbeville can preserve the integrity of their utilities and protect the well-being of its citizens. McKinney also stated, “I am very proud of our staff. They worked very hard to find a way to add value to Turbeville, by securing a solution to the problem. They turned their problem into our collective problem. Our team is topnotch!”
